A full-back skull — one composition instead of many small pieces
The story of a full-back tattoo: one large, realistic skull wrapped in barbed wire instead of many small designs. From consultation, through the sessions, to the healed result.
Szymek came to the studio with a „problem” I know very well: the sleeve was done, but the back — the largest canvas we carry — stood empty.
At the consultation we quickly agreed on one thing: filling that space with many small motifs would break it into random pieces. One large, well-thought-out composition does far more — visually and for years to come. We chose a skull: a classic, powerful symbol that at this scale can show realism at its fullest.
The design was built for this particular body: a skull spanning the full width of the back, wrapped in barbed wire, in pure black & grey. We spread the work across five sessions — structure and the darkest areas first, then shading, down to details like the individual teeth, each with its own play of light.
The black-and-white clips show the sessions in progress — sketch still on the skin. And at the very end: the healed result in daylight. The composition works with the sleeve instead of competing with it — which was exactly the point.
